Everyone has at least once encountered the appearance of a wen on the body. They can come in different sizes and form on any part of the body. There are cases when wen and lumps spread throughout the body. What is the reason for this phenomenon?
Rice. 1. Fats and bumps all over the body can be a sign of hereditary lipomatosis
Concept: wen
Wen (lipoma) - compactions in the subcutaneous layer, soft to the touch. In most cases, they do not cause any discomfort or pain. Looks like a bump.
The boundaries of the formation are quite clear; when pressed, it can move to the sides. They occur in places where adipose tissue is present. Quite often they are diagnosed on the head (its scalp), behind the ear.
The size of the wen is small, in certain cases its growth is noted. Sometimes you can notice small white wen on the eyelids or under the eyes.
In most cases, a lipoma is not detected immediately and does not cause any unpleasant symptoms. It may cause discomfort if placed in places where it will be subject to pressure or friction, such as on the shoulder or neck.
Many small wen in one place is called lipomatosis.
The formations rarely degenerate into malignant ones, but experts advise getting rid of them in view of possible growth. This is especially true for white wen on the face and around the eyes. When they increase in size, they do not look aesthetically pleasing and cause moral inconvenience to their wearer.
How to evaluate the results?
The swelling that appears over the wound in the first days after self-removal of the wen makes it difficult to evaluate the results of the manipulation.
Possible outcomes:
- The wen has disappeared;
- It shrank but remained in place;
- The effect is zero.
If there is no positive result, you should not repeat self-removal of the wen; you should seek the help of a doctor.
Modern radical techniques:
- Cryotherapy – destruction with liquid nitrogen;
- Electrocoagulation – cauterization of the wen;
- Laser therapy – removal of formation with a narrowly directed laser beam;
- Radio wave surgery – excision of the wen using a radio knife.
Doctors at specialized medical centers will help you get rid of the tumor painlessly and without complications. They can remove small fatty deposits everywhere: on the eyelids, on the scalp, on the back, in the collar area, in the genital area. But you need to understand that enucleation of a large, inflamed or deeply located lipoma requires a traditional surgical operation - modern gentle techniques are powerless here.
Traditional medicine recipes, especially, do not always give the desired result, even when it comes to removing a small, painless wen. Such home treatments can cause growth or provoke a severe allergic reaction.
Causes and symptoms of appearance
Why can a person develop wen? What reasons provoke the appearance of such a formation?
The exact reason for this phenomenon is currently unknown. In most cases, it is believed that the disease can be caused by a violation of metabolic processes in the body. However, there are other factors that can lead to the appearance and growth of wen.
Factors:
- Violation of skin metabolism, malfunction of the sebaceous glands,
- Heredity,
- Disturbances in hormonal levels, their changes,
- Disorders of the thyroid gland, pituitary gland,
- Diseases of the kidneys, pancreas in chronic form,
- Liver dysfunction
- Sedentary lifestyle,
- Diabetes,
- Weakened immune system
- Increased blood cholesterol levels,
- Having bad habits.
Thus, various factors can provoke the development of lipoma. The question of how to remove a wen should be resolved with a specialist. You shouldn't do this yourself. How to understand that education is a wen? What symptoms and signs are characteristic of such a formation?
Signs:
- Round education,
- The diameter varies from 1mm to several centimeters,
- Does not cause pain
- Can move when pressed
- There is no inflammatory process,
- Rarely changes in size.
Subcutaneous wen quite rarely turns into a malignant form, so do not panic. Lipomas are divided into five main types.
Types:
- Angiolipoma. In such a formation there are many blood vessels, which can acquire a brown tint.
- Lipofibroma. The basis of this tumor is adipose tissue and has a certain elasticity.
- Myelolipoma. The formation includes living tissue and may be red in color.
- Myolipoma. This type of wen includes fat and muscle tissue.
- Fibrolipoma. This formation contains connective and adipose tissue. It is not necessary to get rid of it, but it should be under constant supervision.
Depending on the type of subcutaneous wen, the most appropriate treatment is selected. Lipomas are also classified depending on their location.
Why do wen form on the body?
Multiple wen and lumps throughout the body indicate some kind of disorder in the body. It is difficult to say exactly why they form. There are some factors that can become provocateurs:
- weakened immunity;
- poor nutrition, which contains a lot of fats, carbohydrates, and few vitamins and proteins;
- injuries;
- metabolic disorders, especially carbohydrate and fat;
- hormonal health problems;
- smoking;
- hereditary predisposition;
- regular compression of the same areas of the body.
In people over 40 years of age, the risk of developing wen increases.
Rice. 2. Wen on the body can hurt
Types and classification
- Wen located in the subcutaneous layer. To get rid of this type, medical and surgical techniques are used. They often occur on the back, arms, and legs.
- Lipomas located in muscle tissue. In most cases, only surgical intervention is suitable for therapy.
- Pyreneural wen are diagnosed inside the nerve fiber. You need to get rid of them in view of their possible adverse effect on nerve endings.
- Glandular cells in the formation indicate that it is an adenolipoma. Such wen is prone to rapid growth, so it is imperative to get rid of them.
Wen located on the face have a certain classification.
Classification:
- Milium. This formation is most often diagnosed on the forehead, nose, lips, and cheeks. It is white in color and quite dense to the touch. Occurs as a result of blockage of the sebaceous gland.
- Xanthoma. A similar type is observed on the upper eyelids or in the area under the eyes. Has a yellow tint.
Thus, before removing a wen, it is necessary to undergo an examination and find out what type it is.
Contraindications for surgery
Surgical removal of a lipoma, like any other surgical intervention, has a wide range of contraindications.
- Thus, surgical removal of wen is not performed on women in an “interesting” position, or during breastfeeding. Doctors recommend refusing surgery during “critical days.”
- Herpes, recent colds or infectious diseases are also reasons to undergo surgery.
- It is highly undesirable to perform surgical removal of a wen if the patient has been diagnosed with diabetes.
- Surgical removal is also fraught with complications due to secondary immunodeficiency - in other words, reduced body resistance.
Danger and diagnosis
Are wen dangerous? In most cases, no. These formations are not prone to malignancy. However, a wen that is present on the body for a long time gradually becomes an excellent place for the proliferation of various bacteria.
Danger can arise from infection entering the wound when trying to get rid of the growth on your own.
Constant pressure and friction of the area with the lipoma can lead to injury. As a result, it is also possible for the wound to become infected. Before getting rid of a wen, a diagnostic examination is carried out. Diagnosis includes several different studies.
Research:
- External examination, conversation with the patient.
- A general blood test and biochemistry test can reveal various disorders within the body, the presence of hormonal imbalance.
- The use of ultrasound allows one to determine the exact size of the formation, location, and homogeneity.
- X-rays are used for possible tumor growth. Helps to understand how deep the lipoma is, what tissues it affects, and whether it is present in the muscles.
- Computed tomography allows you to see the wen from different angles, its structure, and determine the presence of other tissues. If necessary, a contrast agent is used to obtain an accurate result.
- If degeneration of the formation is suspected, a biopsy is prescribed. The obtained materials are examined in histological laboratories.
These techniques allow you to most accurately make a diagnosis before removing the lipoma.
How to remove a wen yourself?
When removing even a small formation on your own, it is difficult to avoid pain and bleeding from the opened wound. Therefore, a large wen (more than 1 cm in diameter) must be entrusted to a doctor.
Rules to follow during manipulation:
- Hands are washed with soap and disinfected with an antiseptic wipe;
- The skin around the wen is disinfected with an alcohol-containing solution;
- The opening needle must be sterile; it is better to use a disposable syringe; manipulations with the needle are performed with extreme caution.
Stages of wen removal:
- Stretch the skin in the area where the wen is located.
- Pierce the upper layer of the epidermis with a needle, and if necessary, duplicate the puncture at an angle of 45°.
- Wipe the released blood with a swab soaked in an alcohol-containing solution.
- Push out the contents of the wen capsule without pressing it with your fingers.
- Apply Vishnevsky ointment, Levomekol or tetracycline ointment to the wound to disinfect and additionally draw out the contents of the capsule.
Wen in adults and children
How do wen differ in adults and children? The symptoms of the disease in children are no different from adults. The formation looks like a dense ball located inside the skin layer. It does not cause pain, does not itch, and does not become inflamed.
Lipoma on a child's face most often occurs in infancy. In newborns, they require treatment and resolve on their own within about two months. But this applies mainly to mileums - white small wen.
If a wen appears on your baby’s cheek or other place on the face, you should contact a medical facility. It is worth getting rid of such formations.
It is worth noting that a wen on a child’s butt, neck, or thigh also needs to be removed. The only way to get rid of the tumor is surgery. However, it is not necessary until the child reaches five years of age.
Parents should remember that such a formation will not disappear with age; it can only increase in size and cause more and more discomfort to the child. Therefore, it is worth visiting medical institutions on time.
Possible complications
Despite the apparent absence of danger from wen, it still exists. Any unfavorable conditions, trauma to the tumor, or exposure to ultraviolet rays can lead to unwanted mutations and transformations.
The dense capsule that forms around the wen that has long existed on the body becomes an obstacle to the penetration of immune cells through it, protecting against the activity of bacterial agents. This circumstance creates an easy environment for the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria. Repeated attempts to remove wen on your own lead to the same consequences. That is why wen should be promptly treated in a medical facility, preventing them from increasing in size and becoming inflamed.

Methods for treating wen
Wen therapy is carried out after conducting the necessary examinations and making an accurate diagnosis. For treatment, medications, surgery, and traditional methods can be used.
Medications
How to get rid of lipoma without surgery? For this, you can use various medications.
Medicines:
- Vishnevsky ointment, Zvezdochka balm, Ichthyol ointment. These products have a resolving effect and will help you quickly get rid of the problem. They are used in the same way - applied to the area with the wen, covered with cellophane and a warm cloth on top, and fixed with a bandage. Leave this compress for about ten hours, after which it is replaced with a new one.
- The iodine solution is mixed with the same amount of nine percent vinegar. Lubricate the sore spot several times a day.
- You can make compresses from hydrogen peroxide, applying them to the tumor and leaving it overnight to get rid of the disease.
- Videstim ointment helps accelerate the formation of proteins and the breakdown of fat. When applied regularly twice a day to the lipoma, it causes it to “dry out.” Gradually the formation completely disappears.
Medications are selected by a specialist based on the diagnosis.
Surgery
There are several types of therapy in this way.
Kinds:
- Surgery. In this case, the wen is removed using a scalpel. An incision is made in the skin through which the capsule is removed. Used for large formations. Recurrences are very rare, but scars may remain.
- Endoscopy. A small incision is made on the skin. Using an endoscope, the contents are liquefied and gradually removed. The advantages of the method are rapid healing and minimal traces after the intervention.
- Liposuction. Used to get rid of small wen. The contents are simply sucked out using a special device. The downside is frequent relapses of the disease.
- Laser removal is the most delicate. In this case, the surrounding tissues have minimal impact, the vessels are immediately “sealed”, the intervention lasts no more than half an hour. Relapses practically do not occur.
- If the size of the wen is less than five centimeters, it is possible to use the radio wave method. It is similar to using a laser, but the cost of the procedure will be higher.
- Cryodestruction. In this case, the formation is affected by liquid nitrogen vapor. Leaves no marks or scars.
Which method is most suitable for the patient to get rid of the disease is determined in the medical institution.
ethnoscience
You can get rid of a tumor at home using various folk recipes.
Recipes:
- One onion needs to be baked until soft. Add one large spoon of grated laundry soap to the onion pulp. A compress from the mixture is applied to the wen and changed up to two times a day. The medicine is stored in the refrigerator.
- One small spoon of lard is mixed with the same amount of garlic juice. The resulting product is rubbed onto the formation several times a day.
- A good remedy is a compress made from a strong decoction of celandine. The bandage is applied at night. After a week, the formation will look like a boil, then it will break through and the contents will come out.
- Mix equal amounts of sea salt and honey. Apply to the tumor and hold until the skin becomes red and tingles. Wash off and repeat until cured.
- Mix aloe juice and honey and use for compresses. Keep for half an hour, rinse, repeat twice a day.
Traditional medicine helps in many cases, but it is necessary to monitor the skin's reaction to the ingredients of the medicines.
Laser lipoma removal
Unfortunately, laser removal of tumors has its own contraindications. This method is not used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, diabetes, the presence of infectious skin disorders in the area of intended exposure, or immunodeficiency states. Deep-lying, large or branched neoplasms, as well as those whose structure includes vessels and nerves, are not removed using a laser.
In general, the operation is similar to the previous methods. The surgical field is anesthetized, the skin over the tumor is cut with a laser beam, and small vessels are cauterized at the same time. Then the capsule with its contents is removed using a clamp and cut off with a laser. At the end, the wound is sutured and a sterile bandage is applied. The entire procedure takes 15-40 minutes, and during the rehabilitation period you only need to follow the rules of asepsis to avoid inflammation of the wound.
Advantages and disadvantages of various methods
- Lipoma excision.
Excision of a lipoma is the simplest and most affordable way to remove a wen. The operation is performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon injects the lipoma with an anesthetic and removes the tumor along with the capsule through an incision in the skin. Removal of the fibrous capsule is an undeniable advantage of this method. This prevents the re-formation of lipoma in the old place, which means it reduces the risk of relapse to a minimum. This method also allows one to examine the histological structure of the tumor. In general, the operation lasts no more than half an hour.
- Liposuction.
Liposuction allows the tumor to be removed through a small hole. A special device is inserted into the cavity of the wen, which destroys the lipoma. Many doctors and patients love this method for its minimal invasiveness and good cosmetic results. However, the disadvantage is the inability to remove the fibrous capsule of the wen, which creates the possibility of future relapse of the tumor.
- Laser removal.
Laser techniques are used to eliminate tumors larger than 3 cm. The method is gentle, carries minimal risks of bleeding and infection, and does not leave wounds or scars.
