D-Panthenol: in what cases is it used, which is better, cream or ointment?

Dexpanthenol is a substance derived from the water-soluble B vitamin - pantothenic acid. It is this that the body’s need increases when the skin and tissues are damaged. To compensate for the lack of substance and accelerate cell regeneration, use the topical drug D-Panthenol.

Types of dosage forms, composition

D-Panthenol is available in the form of ointment and cream. 1 g of both forms contains 50 mg of dexpanthenol.

D-Panthenol cream has a white color, a uniform structure, and no pungent odor. It is packaged in tubes of 25 or 50 g, which are sold in boxes with instructions. Additional ingredients include propylene glycol, methyl parahydroxy- and propyl parahydroxybenzoate, macrogol cetostearate, cetostearyl alcohol, paraffin, petroleum jelly, sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, purified water.

D-Panthenol ointment has a white color with a yellowish tint, a thicker structure and a faint odor. It is packaged in 30 g aluminum tubes, which are placed in a box complete with instructions. In addition to dexpanthenol, it contains glycerin, lanolin, petroleum jelly, liquid and solid paraffin, stearyl and cetyl alcohols, and water.

How to use: instructions for use

Panthenol as a facial and body care product must be used with extreme caution. An excess of vitamin B5, which is listed as the main component in the composition of the product, is also undesirable for the skin, as is its deficiency.

Before applying Panthenol, it is necessary to conduct an allergy test, then select the appropriate form of the drug:

  • cream or ointment for dry skin;
  • spray - for combination, oily skin.

Apply to dry, make-up-free skin in the evening. Leave for 30 minutes, then remove any remaining residue with a paper towel. Panthenol is not a universal magic remedy for wrinkles, acne and other skin problems, but it is effective in the presence of wounds, burns, redness, and cracks. Cosmetologists recommend having this product in your home medicine cabinet so that, when necessary, you can use it for the intended purpose indicated in the instructions.

If the application site is infected, then pre-treatment with an antiseptic - Miramistin or Chlorhexidine - is required; it is not advisable to use hydrogen peroxide.

Ointment and cream differ in their texture: the ointment is based on fatty components that create a protective film on the surface that softens and nourishes the skin. Therefore, it is better to use the ointment to prevent diaper rash, frostbite, and dermatitis in infants.

The cream is more liquid because it contains water. It is absorbed easier and faster, therefore it is indicated for mild frostbite, thermal burns, and for protection from harmful weather factors.

Rules for using cream and spray

Before using the cream, you must first cleanse the skin using antibacterial and cleansing agents. The ointment is applied in a thin layer half an hour after the procedure, 2-3 times a day for several weeks.

To use the spray, you also need to clean the skin from the accumulation of fatty secretions and dirt. Before use, shake the can and spray the product onto dry skin from a distance of 20 cm. Panthenol aerosol can be used three times a day.

Selection and application depending on skin type

The choice of product depends on the specific skin type:

  • For oily skin, Panthenol spray is better suited: it has a lighter structure than cream. Before using the product, you need to cleanse the epidermis of sebum and spray it on the face from a distance of 10 cm.
  • For dry skin, you should choose a cream. The product is quickly absorbed and moisturizes the dermis. You can smear it on your face like a regular cosmetic product.
  • For the combined type, Panthenol in the form of a cream is also used. The product does not clog facial pores and improves the condition of the skin.

Normal skin also needs constant care. To keep it nourished and elastic, you can use both forms of Panthenol. It is recommended to apply the products at night.

Use in children and pregnant women

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are not an obstacle to using D-Panthenol for external use. The substances of the drug do not penetrate the placenta and do not have a negative effect on the process of formation and development of the fetus.

The cream or ointment is recommended for use by women when caring for the mammary glands: it is necessary to lubricate the nipples after each application to the breast to prevent microcracks and injuries.

For children, the product can be used from birth; the cream or ointment is applied to the skin under the diaper at each diaper change or after hygiene procedures. For older children, D-Panthenol will help quickly heal minor cuts, abrasions, and scratches.

What is Panthenol?

Now the industry produces a whole series of such drugs. The main active ingredient of all of them is pantothenic acid and its derivative – provitamin B5. Thanks to the action of this substance, Panthenol promotes tissue regeneration, accelerates metabolism in skin cells and relieves inflammation. All Panthenol-based products do not contain a fatty base, since pantothenic acid is water-soluble and is less easily absorbed in the presence of fats. Previously, this drug was a medicine for skin damage and sunburn. Nowadays, many preparations based on Panthenol include vitamin E, which increases muscle tone and preserves youthful skin. Additionally, peach and shea butters are added to the cream, which stimulate regeneration processes and promote skin rejuvenation. Therefore, now women often use Panthenol anti-wrinkle cream. Reviews of this cosmetic product note the rapid positive effect of its use.

The effectiveness of face cream

Products containing Panthenol have a light structure and are easily absorbed. This is explained by the fact that this product is hygroscopic and has a low molecular weight. Therefore, all active ingredients quickly penetrate into the deep layers of the skin. In addition, the product does not contain paraffin, fats and petroleum jelly. This is why Panthenol cream is so effective against wrinkles under the eyes. It does not weigh down the skin and regulates the production of sebaceous secretions. The ability to regenerate epidermal cells helps in rejuvenating the top layer of skin. It also effectively fights acne. But more often, Panthenol anti-wrinkle cream is used.

Varieties and composition

All produced forms of Panthenol include D-panthenol, a synthetic derivative of vitamin B5, or panthenol, its analogue.

To enhance the effect, many manufacturers add aloe vera extract, allantoin, and vitamin E as additional components.

It is better to choose facial preparations with these caring components, because they add positive properties to the beneficial properties of the drug:

  • hydration;
  • anti-inflammatory effect;
  • antioxidant properties.

This certainly won't make it any worse.

Reviews from cosmetologists about Panthenol cream from EVO

Cosmetologists have different opinions on the use of Panthenol cream for the face. Some consider it justified and effective, since the product has a number of positive qualities comparable in action to the best branded cosmetic products. Others argue that to solve age-related problems, there are products specifically designed for this purpose with a smaller list of contraindications and side effects.

Basic recommendations for those who decide to use Panthenol for the face:

  • For those with very dry, dehydrated skin that is prone to flaking, it is better to take oil-based ointments. You are guaranteed to receive deep hydration, even complexion, intensive nutrition and improved metabolic processes. It is better to use at night. For severe problems - every day, for moderate problems - once every two to three days. It is best to focus on the condition of the skin daily;
  • normal skin requires special protection in the autumn-winter period. You need to use the cream regularly once a week at night. In spring and summer, especially with increased photosensitivity, it is better not to use;
  • oily skin also needs hydration, nutrition and stimulation of internal processes at the cellular level. Oil-based products and creams can clog pores and cause acne. Panthenol spray can be applied to the face twice a day, having previously cleansed it of any cosmetics and impurities.

Feedback from experts will help answer many questions.

Marina, cosmetologist, Perm

“I often recommend to my clients to use Panthenol if they have certain problems that cannot be solved with classic anti-aging cosmetics. I noticed positive dynamics with increased dryness, flaking, fine wrinkles and loss of elasticity at the age of 45 years. At an older age, problems are solved, but the visual effect is not as pronounced.”

Anna, dermatologist, Moscow

“Sorry, colleagues, but I do not recommend that my patients use medications where they can do without medications. Panthenol is a medicine, don’t forget about it. And he has clear evidence."

Irina, cosmetologist, St. Petersburg

“Fighting wrinkles in the early stages is a feasible mission for Panthenol. At an older age, certain problems such as dryness, flaking, cracks and even pigmentation can also be eliminated with this remedy.”

Oksana, cosmetologist, Samara

“I recommend it to all my clients who have age-related problems with their facial skin. Regeneration processes improve, the epidermis is moisturized. But you shouldn’t count on complete relief from wrinkles.”

Victoria, cosmetologist, Ryazan

“It’s medicine in Africa too. Dear women, do not risk using Panthenol cream yourself. You don’t prescribe antibiotics for yourself, do you?!”

Olga, dermatologist, Omsk

“If you want to get rid of the side effects of your outdoor activities in hot countries, use Panthenol. There must be compelling reasons for daily use, the presence of which can only be determined by a specialist.”

Tatyana, cosmetologist, Novosibirsk

“You don’t need to be so categorical in your judgments about medicines. After all, patients do not run to the doctor to prescribe Aspirin for them when they have a fever. If you see significant problems on your face that your cosmetics do not solve, try Panthenol, only carefully and without fanaticism. If you don’t see any improvement in a couple of days, then you are welcome to see a specialist.”
