Yam ointment is an effective bactericidal-fungicidal agent

Ointment "Yam BK" is a bactericidal-fungicidal drug intended for the treatment of skin diseases of warm-blooded animals (mainly dogs, cattle, poultry). The product is contraindicated for use in cats due to sensitivity to the components of the medication. It should be used for the following diagnoses: eczema and dermatitis, which can be caused by tick bites, as well as trichophytosis and hoof lesions.

Compound

Ointment "Yam BK" has a complex effect due to its composition , which includes:

  • salicylic acid – 5%, which has an antibacterial and antiseptic effect, participates in the neutralization of pathogenic microflora and prevents the proliferation of pathogens, cleanses the skin of exfoliated scales and mite toxins;
  • zinc oxide – 10%, anti-inflammatory and drying component, preventing the production of excess sebum;
  • sulfur – 10%, which has an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effect, cleanses the skin, stimulates recovery and increases its protective properties;
  • distilled water – up to 10%;
  • turpentine – 2%, which disinfects and has a bactericidal and antiparasitic effect, having a detrimental effect on ticks and other parasites;
  • tar – 5%, a regenerating and anti-inflammatory component that dries and cleanses the skin, saturating it with a complex of beneficial microelements;
  • Vaseline – 40% and lanolin – 18% are the basis of the ointment, which ensures the optimal effect of the drug, softens the skin and prevents its dryness;
  • Lysol – 2%, which has a disinfecting effect and helps the skin cleanse itself of pathogens;
  • Phenolic-free coal tar creolin – 5%.

Did you know? Tar has long been used as an antiseptic and antiparasitic agent, for example for scalp and hair care.

Pharmacological properties

The ointment is intended exclusively for external use and belongs to drugs intended for the treatment of skin diseases.

Thanks to the combination of ingredients, Yam ointment, applied externally, is a fungicide, that is, it acts on fungi, and an acaricide, that is, it fights mites.

Did you know? Salicylic acid was used to treat rheumatism back in the 19th century, but then, extracted from plant materials, it was too expensive a medicine. In 1874, a method was found for extracting the drug from phenol, this marked the beginning of the industrial use of salicylic for the production of many medicines, of which the most famous is aspirin.

It has the following properties:

  • antiseptic (disinfecting);
  • antibacterial;
  • antiprotrozoic, that is, neutralizing parasites that cause the disease;
  • anti-inflammatory;
  • astringent, that is, forming a protective film;
  • drying;
  • creatolic, that is, softening, dissolving and exfoliating unnecessary;
  • metabolic, that is, removing waste products of pathogens - toxins - from the layers of the skin.

It does not irritate the dog’s skin when applied locally and does not have a sensitizing effect, that is, causing increased sensitivity to the drug.

The combination of these properties contributes to the restoration of the animal’s skin as soon as possible.

Important! GOST classifies Yam BK ointment as a low-hazard substance, specifically having a hazard class of 4.

Security measures

During treatment, follow the recommendations:

  • Handle your pet with gloves: ringworm is contagious to humans.
  • Do not comb the fur until it is cured. The brush transfers fungal spores or mite larvae to healthy areas.
  • Do not skip treatments, this reduces the therapeutic effect.
  • Do not use other external agents simultaneously with YAM BK.

And the most difficult thing: do not let the animal lick the medicine.

How to use

It is advisable to start treatment prescribed by a doctor based on research as soon as possible. Ideally, when the first signs appear. The sooner therapy is started, the faster the cure will occur and the less the infection will spread through the skin.

Hair clipping, removal of crusts and treatment with antiseptic agents is not required before starting treatment.

Important! Since lichens are similar in symptoms, but different in the pathogens that caused them, the treatment for them is different. Therefore, it is very important not to self-medicate, but to consult a specialist and conduct a comprehensive laboratory diagnosis. Incorrect treatment can lead to the disease becoming chronic.

“Yam” ointment is taken with a spatula and applied in a thin layer to the affected areas of the skin. It is recommended to expand the treatment area, lubricating the edges not affected by the disease by 3-4 centimeters.

When treating lichen, “Yam” ointment is applied twice a day for a week to a week and a half . This time is usually enough for the causative microorganism to die: gradually the pet’s skin, and a little later its fur, acquire an increasingly healthy appearance. As the crusts disappear, the hairline is restored.

After 10 days of treatment, it is necessary to ensure that it was effective and no relapses are expected. To do this, you need to take your pet for examination, where smears will be taken from him. Sometimes it happens that the disease remains untreated, or perhaps the pathogen remains in the bedding, or the dog continues to be in contact with the sick animal that infected it.

Important! Before starting treatment, a sick pet should be isolated from others after it is determined that they show no signs of illness. Otherwise, all infected animals must be treated.

When treating a pet with Yam ointment, it is prohibited to use other topical antilichen agents simultaneously with it.

Precautionary measures

It should be remembered that trichophytosis and microsporia are contagious and dangerous diseases for humans, and it is imperative to follow safety precautions when treating a pet, as well as when communicating with it outside of medical procedures.

When starting the treatment process, you should use rubber gloves and a spatula to apply the product.

Important! If the product accidentally gets on the skin or mucous membranes, it is necessary to rinse the contact areas with plenty of water. If a person develops an allergic reaction to the ointment, antihistamines are used.

After finishing the work, throw away the gloves, wash your hands with a soapy solution in warm water.

Empty containers for Yam ointment cannot be used; they are thrown away.

Advantages and disadvantages

Based on reviews from animal owners, we can summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the medicine.

Pros:

  • The medicine effectively copes with fungus, mites, and quickly restores damaged tissues.
  • Easy to apply, fits tightly onto the skin. There is no need to cut the wool, soak it, or remove scales or crusts, as with most external products.
  • Does not give side effects. Safe for animals except cats.
  • There are no restrictions on age or physiological state.
  • Sold in all pharmacies, inexpensive.

Minuses:

  • The ointment is almost not absorbed and leaves greasy marks on the skin and fur.
  • Doesn't wash off well with water or shampoo. You can quickly clean it with vegetable oil.
  • It is difficult to wash, so you have to constantly monitor where your pet is sitting or lying.
  • The strong odor lingers for a long time and fades away slowly.

Contraindications

The drug is so versatile that contraindications to its use are minimal. One of the serious disadvantages of the ointment is that it is prohibited for the treatment of diseases in cats, since cats are sensitive to tar.

It is also prohibited to treat animals with Yam BK ointment that have been shown to be sensitive to any component of the drug, manifested by signs of skin irritation. In this case, treatment should be stopped, the ointment should be removed with a cotton swab, and the treatment area should be rinsed with warm water. There is no additional need to treat this irritation; without contact with the irritant, it will go away on its own.

In what cases is the drug prescribed?

The ointment is used to eliminate ringworm, dermatitis, eczema and other skin diseases in cats. The drug is also prescribed in the presence of mites and scabies. The medicine is used only after diagnostic procedures, since many skin diseases in pets have similar symptoms.

Ringworm in cats is a contagious disease.

Attention! If your pet has bald patches, the skin is irritated and scratched, and general health is deteriorating, this may indicate the presence of a fungal infection, which is easily transmitted to humans. It is important to contact a veterinarian in time and isolate your pet from contact with other animals and children.
