Klenzit-S or Baziron AS: comparison of drugs and which is better

From this article you will learn:

  • Baziron AC gel for acne – composition analysis,
  • instructions for use,
  • reviews of Baziron AS from dermatologists.

The article was written by a specialist with higher medical education.

Baziron AS is an antimicrobial drug in the form of a gel for external use, which is intended for the treatment of acne (papulopustular form of acne). The active component of the drug is a bactericidal component such as “benzene peroxide”, which effectively affects the bacteria involved in the formation of acne. These include primarily the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) and Streptococcus epidermidis.

Reviews from dermatologists about the drug Baziron for acne indicate that this drug is the gold standard for acne treatment. To date, there are no strains of P. acnes or S. epidermidis bacteria that are resistant to benzoyl peroxide, but you should understand that acne cannot be treated with benzoyl peroxide alone. And we will always combine the drug Baziron with topical retinoids (Klenzit or Differin), and sometimes also with antibiotics.

Photos of Baziron AS gel packaging –

The Baziron AS® trademark belongs to a pharmaceutical company (Switzerland), but production is located in Italy. There are 3 versions of the release form - gel with a concentration of benzoyl peroxide of 2.5, 5.0 and 10%. The drug is available over-the-counter and can also be used in patients over 12 years of age.

How much does Baziron AS cost in pharmacies, analogues:

For Baziron AS, the price in pharmacies will average from 800 rubles (per tube of 40 g). It should be noted that all forms of release cost almost the same - regardless of the concentration of benzoyl peroxide. The price is for 2022. This drug has no cheap analogues in Russia, or indeed any direct analogues. Cheaper, you can only buy cleansers with benzoyl peroxide, but this is not very effective and is more suitable for prevention than treatment.

However, there are several combination preparations also for external use, which also contain benzoyl peroxide. This, for example, is the drug “Indoxyl” (Great Britain) - it contains a combination of benzoyl peroxide 5% and the antibiotic clindamycin 1% (it costs 800 rubles per 25 g tube). And the drug Effezel (France) - it contains benzoyl peroxide 2.5% in combination with the retinoid adapalene 0.1%. This drug is already significantly more expensive than Baziron - the price for it will be at least 1,300 rubles (for a 30 g tube).

Comparison of the effectiveness of Azelik and Baziron AS

The effectiveness of Azelik is quite similar to Baziron AS - this means that the ability of the drug substance to provide the maximum possible effect is similar.
For example, if the therapeutic effect of Azelik is more pronounced, then using Baziron AS even in large doses will not achieve this effect.

Also, the speed of therapy is an indicator of the speed of therapeutic action in Azelik and Baziron AS are approximately the same. And bioavailability, that is, the amount of a drug reaching its site of action in the body, is similar. The higher the bioavailability, the less it will be lost during absorption and use by the body.

Baziron: reviews of dermatologists about the drug

As we said above, reviews of Baziron AS from dermatologists allow us to deservedly classify this drug as the gold standard for the treatment of acne.
But, only as part of complex therapy! International protocols for the treatment of acne are well described in the most famous textbook on dermatology - Fitzpatrick's Dermatology (we use the 8th edition). What does this textbook tell us? 1) We have already said that acne can be of 2 types. Firstly, these are papules (without pus inside), and secondly, they are pustules with pus. A patient may have both types of acne well expressed at the same time, or one type may dominate the other. And this is very important for us, because... When prescribing a treatment regimen, we will take into account what type of inflammatory elements dominates in the patient.

2) If the patient is dominated by papules, then we will prescribe him the drug Baziron AS once a day (in the morning) + one of the topical retinoids based on adapalene. For example, it could be Differin or Clenzit (optional). Topical retinoids are also used externally once a day, but at night (24stoma.ru).

3) If the patient has pustules with pus, then this is a clear indication for using not only the combination of “benzoyl peroxide + topical retinoid”, but also adding an antibiotic. For mild to moderate severity, the antibiotic is prescribed externally; for severe acne, it is prescribed orally. Thus, for mild to moderate severity, we must use a combination of drugs. And here there are many possible combinations of different drugs.

For example, we can still use the drug Baziron AS 1 time a day (in the morning) + the drug Klenzit-S in the evening (it contains the retinoid adapalene + the antibiotic clindamycin). Another option may involve the use not of Baziron, but of combination drugs where benzoyl peroxide is combined with antibiotics or retinoids. Examples of combination drugs for acne treatment:

  • Indoxyl (UK) – benzoyl peroxide 5% + clindamycin 1%.
  • Effezel (France) – benzoyl peroxide 2.5% + retinoid adapalene 0.1%.

Those. we can, for example, use the combination drug Indoxyl once a day (in the morning), and in the evening use one of the topical retinoids (Differin or Clenzit - to choose from). Another option is that we can use the combined drug Effezel once a day (in the evening), but in the morning of that day we then have to use one of the antibiotic gels - it could be Dalatsin, Clindavit or others. As you can see: the abundance of different drugs gives us room for maneuver.

Important: But we want to assure you that acne treatment is not limited to just prescribing benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoids or antibiotics. Phototherapy, laser treatment, and in women, oral contraceptives to reduce the production of androgens can play a major role in treatment. You can read about all these methods using the links below.

Comparison of safety of Azelik and Baziron AS

The safety of a drug includes many factors.

At the same time, Azelik’s is quite similar to Baziron AS. It is important where the drug is metabolized: drugs are excreted from the body either unchanged or in the form of products of their biochemical transformations. Metabolism occurs spontaneously, but most often involves major organs such as the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, brain and others. When assessing metabolism in Azelik, as well as in Baziron AS, we look at which organ is the metabolizing organ and how critical the effect on it is.

The risk-benefit ratio is when the prescription of a drug is undesirable, but justified under certain conditions and circumstances, with the obligatory observance of caution in use. At the same time, Azelik does not have any risks when used, just like Baziron AS.

Also, when calculating safety, it is taken into account whether only allergic reactions occur or possible dysfunction of the main organs. In other matters, as well as the reversibility of the consequences of using Azelik and Baziron AS.

Conclusion

Thus, these drugs are practically no different from each other . They effectively cope with pimples and acne. Their cost is also approximately the same, so there is no point in choosing a product based on the patient’s financial side. The gel should be selected based on patient preference. Also, in some cases, a doctor’s consultation is required, since he will be able to accurately determine which of the listed analogues will cope faster in a given situation. Naturally, you can find cheaper analogs, but as practice shows, they are less effective.

Comparison of addiction in Azelik and Baziron AS

Like safety, addiction also involves many factors that must be considered when evaluating a drug.

So, the totality of the values of such parameters as “o syndrome” in Azelik is quite similar to the similar values in Baziron AS. Withdrawal syndrome is a pathological condition that occurs after the cessation of intake of addictive or dependent substances into the body. And resistance is understood as initial immunity to a drug; in this it differs from addiction, when immunity to a drug develops over a certain period of time. The presence of resistance can only be stated if an attempt has been made to increase the dose of the drug to the maximum possible. At the same time, Azelik’s syndrome values are quite small, however, the same as for Baziron AS.

Klenzit-S

adapalene and clindamycin as its main components .

The gel is a homogeneous white mass .

It consists of the following formative components:

  • Macrogol.
  • Phenoxyethanol.
  • Sodium hydroxide.
  • Water.
  • E218.
  • Poloxamer.
  • Trilon B.
  • Carbomer 940.

According to its chemical structure, adapalene is a retinoid metabolite . It stops the inflammatory process and has a comedolytic effect. When applied externally, the absorption of adapalene is approximately 4% of the dosage used; it is excreted mainly through the intestines.

Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic . It has a broad spectrum of action and is active against Propionibacterium acnes, which causes acne. The antibiotic suppresses the process of protein biosynthesis in bacterial cells, as a result of which the growth of pathogenic microorganisms stops.

Klenzit-S should be applied to previously cleaned and dried problem areas once a day at night for 2-4 weeks. The doctor may extend the course of therapy.

Comparison of side effects of Azelik and Baziron AS

Side effects or adverse events are any adverse medical event that occurs in a subject after administration of a drug.

Azelik's adverse events are almost the same as those of Baziron AS. They both have few side effects. This implies that the frequency of their occurrence is low, that is, the indicator of how many cases of an undesirable effect of treatment are possible and registered is low. The undesirable effect on the body, the strength of influence and the toxic effect of Azelik are similar to Baziron AS: how quickly the body recovers after taking it and whether it recovers at all.

Acne or rosacea. How to distinguish and what to do

When consulting with new patients, I discovered that people often mistakenly believe that they suffer from acne, while having all the signs of rosacea. Sometimes such errors occur in medical prescriptions. So, a person is sure that he has acne, while in fact he has a papulopustular form of rosacea.

How to tell the difference?

Papulopustular acne is often confused with papulopustular rosacea.

AcneRosacea
The skin background is of normal color, possibly with isolated areas of redness. The skin of the central part of the face (sometimes + neck and chest) is bright red.
Comedones, papules, pustules. wide pores Spider veins and spider veins, there may be papules and pustules. Comedones are very rare.
The elements of the rash are located chaotically, not symmetrically.Redness and rashes on the forehead, cheeks, chin closer to the center of the face. Most often they are located symmetrically on the right and left.
There are no or very rare “outbreaks” in which the face turns bright and sharply red.Frequent "outbreaks". The skin instantly turns purple from cold/heat/sun, hot drinks and spicy food, from a glass of wine, from the attention of others (being called to the board or to the boss’s office)
The redness is not frequent and not persistent, it goes away quickly.Redness of the skin lasts a very long time or is constant.
Skin tolerates water wellBright flashes of redness on any contact with water (regular washing)
Redness and sensitivity of the skin occur as a result of the use of systemic or topical retinoids and quickly disappear after their discontinuation.I have always had a tendency to flush my face since childhood. (Options - occurred after a severe sunburn, simultaneously with serious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, endocrine system, autoimmune diseases)

Approaches to external therapy for acne and rosacea are different.

For the comedonal form of ACNE , the drugs of choice, the most effective and reasonable therapy, will be local retinoids, such as Differin, Klenzit, Retinoic ointment, Retasol, Adaklin.

For the papulopustular form of ACNE, the most suitable products are products based on benzoyl peroxide - Baziron, Effezel.

In the case of papulopustular ROSACEA , the most effective and pathogenetically substantiated drug is Azelik/Skinoren, that is, 15-20% azelaic acid.

Azelaic acid, due to its anti-inflammatory effect, also works against any form of acne, that is, it will not harm any acne. But active and dermatologically aggressive anti-acne drugs, such as Baziron, can aggravate the situation with extremely sensitive and irritated skin due to rosacea. Therefore, if for some reason you do not have the opportunity to clarify the diagnosis with an experienced dermatologist, or there are reasons to doubt the correctness of the diagnosis, in general, in the case where there is no complete certainty - acne or rosacea, then preference should be given to drugs with azelaic acid and avoid additional aggressive effects on the skin. Prohibited: peelings, scrubs, gels, alcohol, electrical procedures .

Azelaic acid preparations are described in detail in the video Rosacea 3. Approaches to nutrition, lifestyle, and overall health of the body for acne and rosacea are generally very similar. The main thing is to remove sugar, dairy, white flour, red meat, and sausages. It is worth eating more vegetables (especially all types of cabbage), leafy greens, raw nuts, berries, fruits, and cereals - buckwheat, millet, brown rice, quinoa, amaranth. Drink plenty of clean, warm water. But with rosacea, there are also additional provoking foods - triggers of inflammation. Alcohol, caffeine, cinnamon, very hot and very cold foods. This is definitely worth paying attention to.

When redness and sensitivity have decreased, and you want to introduce other acids besides azelaic acid into your care, then you need to start with the softest and lowest percentage polyhydroxy acids, for example 5% lactobionic acid.

And how to combine pharmaceutical products of azelaic acid with moisturizing and other skin care products is described in the video Rosacea 5.

When it comes to care, you should also pay attention to gentle cleansing . Often, with rosacea, significant relief is brought by eliminating water from care, that is, cleansing the skin with milk for sensitive skin without rinsing. But external (and internal) products containing sulfur are suitable for both acne and rosacea.

Azelaic acid does not have to be used in the form of pharmaceutical gels. The Russian professional brand Arcadia has a cream

with the same concentration of azelaic acid as in pharmaceutical products, but with a more interesting composition, smell and consistency. And it seems to me that the burning sensation from it is less than that of pharmaceutical products.

On the page “A good cosmetologist advises” there are examples of pharmacy and professional care products suitable for sensitive skin with rosacea and rosacea.

By the way, there is no medical diagnosis for rosacea. From a medical point of view, the cosmetic problem “rosacea” is considered as prerosacea, that is, the early, initial stage of rosacea.

Cosmetic products alone cannot cure rosacea, but they can significantly improve the aesthetic condition of the skin. Such cosmetics moisturize, have an anti-inflammatory, soothing, softening effect, protect against external aggressive influences, improve local immunity, and have an inhibitory effect on bacteria and Demodex. I will give examples of some pharmaceutical products specially designed for skin with rosacea and rosacea . URIAGE, BIODERMA, AVENE, there are such creams in many other pharmacy and professional lines. In the same pharmacy series there are also tonal products specifically for skin with redness. Some of them have a greenish tint, which, when applied to red skin, neutralizes it.

Comparison of ease of use of Azelik and Baziron AS

This includes dose selection taking into account various conditions and frequency of doses. At the same time, it is important not to forget about the release form of the drug; it is also important to take it into account when making an assessment.

The ease of use of Azelik is approximately the same as that of Baziron AS. However, they are not convenient enough to use.

The drug ratings were compiled by experienced pharmacists who studied international research. The report is generated automatically.
